FROM robbery to accidents, no one’s love life can possibly be as eventful and entertaining as that of Miss Charity Hope Valentine — or can it? writes Lesley Potter.
All will be revealed in a new production of Sweet Charity by Woodley Light Operatic Society.
The musical tells the story of a gullible, hapless young dance hall hostess who narrowly escapes drowning by her fiancé. Charity Hope Valentine picks herself up — and promptly falls into the arms of film star Vittorio Videl.
A night of passion is about to ensue when, in usual Sweet Charity fashion, everything changes. She spends the night hiding in the wardrobe. Finally Charity meets Oscar and a different kind of love affair. It’s still littered with the haphazard events that Charity just can’t seem to avoid though — like getting stuck in a lift or a fairground ride. Not to mention a brush with the law at the Rhythm of Life Church.
The musical, written by Cy Coleman with lyrics by Dorothy Fields, boasts some well-known show numbers including The Rhythm Of Life and Big Spender.
This production, which plays at the Kenton Theatre from June 12 to 15, is directed and choreographed by David Parsonson. Jonathan Heard is the musical director.
