IT will soon be the season for open-air theatre and Chapterhouse Theatre Company is back with some new shows for 2013, writes Lesley Potter.
The summer season begins with a production of Jane Austen’s Sense And Sensibility at Cliveden House on June 22. There are also three different plays in the grounds of Mapledurham House this year — Twelfth Night on July 17, Sherlock Holmes And The Hound Of The Baskervilles on July 18, and children’s show The Wind In The Willows on August 14.
Chapterhouse, which was set up in 2000, has since established itself as one of the most successful touring companies in the UK. This year, it performs at more than 100 venues throughout the country.
Spokeswoman Chelsea Buckthorp, said: “In a season full of magic, romance and enchantment, we are performing some of the best-loved stories of English literature. We pride ourselves on producing accessible, traditional but innovative shows that have entertained thousands of theatre-goers.
“Open-air theatre lends itself perfectly to pre-show picnics, creating an enjoyable and memorable experience for any audience.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for friends and family to sit back and enjoy the pleasure of each other’s company while indulging in a glass of chilled summer wine and watching a wonderfully traditional evening of entertainment.”
Playwright Laura Turner, who adapted Austen’s Sense And Sensibility for Chapterhouse, said: “It’s always been my favourite of the Jane Austen novels. Occasionally overlooked in favour of the unquestionable charms of Elizabeth and Mr Darcy in Pride And Prejudice, for me Sense And Sensibility is a heart-warming story of family, friendship and devotion. I have long championed the novel, and was delighted to adapt it.”
