AS all parents know, entertaining children in the summer holidays is easy — as long as the sun shines.
Here are a few ideas of things to do with the children if the weather takes a turn for the worse...
The Watermill Theatre in Bagnor is staging a new adaptation of the classic children’s story about Alice with Adventures In Wonderland.
Described as a “sensory spectacle” the show is an interactive promenade performance set in the beautiful grounds of this theatre near Newbury. The audience members are thus put in the middle of the action, and invited to sing with the Mock Turtle, play croquet with the Queen of Hearts and take tea with the Mad Hatter.
The family show, staged by Teatro Vivo, sold out at last year’s Greenwich Children’s Festival. You can book tea afterwards in the theatre’s restaurant, and there are contingency plans to move the action inside in case of rain.
The show runs from Monday to Friday, August 12 to 16, and on Sunday, August 18, with performances at 11.30am and 2pm.

Another show based on a famous children’s book plays at the Oxford Playhouse later in August. The Queen’s Knickers is adapted from the best-selling book by Nicholas Allan, and tells the story of Dilys, the Queen’s maid and custodian of her Majesty’s “intimate apparel”. When the knickers go missing one day, a national state of emergency is declared.

The Playhouse is also hosting a number of summer workshops for kids, including Tricks Of The Trade: Improvisation And Mask and a chance to devise an original piece of theatre in the Dreams Of A New World workshop. For more details on any of these workshops visit the theatre’s website.
The grounds of Mapledurham House play host again this summer to the touring Chapterhouse Theatre Company, this year with a production of Wind In The Willows on Wednesday, August 14. Tickets start at £9 for children, and can be bought from the box office on 0871 2200260 or visit www.seetickets.com
The River and Rowing Museum is hosting its first ever space event on Thursday, August 15. At Explore Space! budding astronauts can hear about the planets, moons and stars, as well as working out how old they are in Martian years.
There will be a range of space-themed activities taking place on the day, including the chance to make your own start constellation. There will be prizes for the best-dressed astronaut, alient or star. The space show is suitable for children aged eight and over.
