DRAMA teachers from Shiplake College have been giving pupils a taste of the Roaring Twenties in New York to encourage the boys to take part in a gangster-style musical.
Jenny Unwin and Sian Pearson laid on a screening of the Alan Parker film Bugsy Malone for pupils from years seven to nine, and then dressed as gangsters from the Prohibition era and armed themselves with custard pies.
The stunt was designed to generate interest among pupils ahead of casting for the college’s own production of the show.
Performances will take place in the College’s Tithe Barn Theatre from January 15 to 18 at 7.30pm.
There will also be a matinée performance exclusively for local schools, at 2.30pm on Wednesday, January 15. Proceeds from the show will go to two charities — Launchpad, Reading’s homeless support charity, and Gap-Africa, a charity which supports communities in Africa.
