FANCY a Christmas show with a difference? The New Theatre in Oxford is staging Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS this festive season.
Based on TS Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats’, the musical ran for the Christmas 2006 season in Oxford. This year’s adaptation is directed by Trevor Nunn, with choreography by Gillian Lynne and set and costume design by John Napier.
CATS tells the story of a special night of the year when all Jellicle cats meet at the Jellicle ball where Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, announces which of them will go up to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new life. Music, dance and verse fuse together in a blend of fantasy, drama and romance.
CATS opened at the New London Theatre in 1981 and played almost 9,000 performances. It won an Olivier award for best musical and closed in 2002. On Broadway it was the winner of seven Tony awards including best musical and best director and ran for 18 years making it second only to The Phantom Of The Opera as Broadway’s longest-running musical.
CATS has featured some of this country’s most famous stage performers including Elaine Paige, Bonnie Langford and Paul Nicholas.
The show runs at the New Theatre Oxford from Tuesday, December 17 until Sunday, January 5.
