TWO-TIME BAFTA award-winning actor James Fox will star alongside his son Jack in a new comedy at Theatre Royal Windsor before its West End run.
The pair take on Dear Lupin, based on the best-selling Sunday Times Humour Book of the Year 2012, Dear Lupin, Letters to a Wayward Son, from Tuesday to Saturday, April 14 to 18.
The stage adaptation by celebrated author Michael Simkins recounts the trials and tribulations of Charlie’s unruly youth and adulthood through letters written by his father Roger Mortimer, featuring his trademark humour and a large degree of resignation.
Mortimer’s often hilarious, sometimes touching, always generous letters to his son, are packed with crisp anecdotes and sharp observations.
Spanning 25 years, their correspondence forms a memoir of their relationship and an affectionate portrait of a time gone by.
In an era when letter writing is a vanishing art form, this entertaining show reveals stories of his escapades alongside delightful tales of the family’s eccentricities.
James Fox plays the renowned racing journalist Roger Mortimer in what is his first theatre project in 15 years, having been tied up with films and television roles including A Passage To India, Patriot Games and Downton Abbey.
He said: “It’s about a geriatric Old Etonian hack and long-suffering father, which ticks all the boxes for me.”
Roger Mortimer’s son Charlie is played by James Fox’s son Jack, who said: “It’s brilliant to see Dad return to the stage, and for me, not just as his son, but as an actor it’s a huge privilege to learn from him.
“I hope the rapport we share in life will translate to the stage.”
Theatre Royal Windsor’s executive director Robert Miles added: “It is such an honour for Windsor to be chosen as the launch pad for this exciting new show ahead of its West End run, and fitting given the Eton connection.”
