REHEARSALS are under way for an exciting new production of Peter Shaffer’s masterpiece,
Amadeus.
The show runs from Thursday (February 18) to Saturday, February 20, at the Lancaster Arts Centre in the grounds of Wycombe Abbey girls’ school.
A joint production in aid of the charity Child Bereavement UK, Amadeus sees High Wycombe’s Fourways Theatre Company teaming up with the Garden Players from Maidenhead.
The multi-award-winning play, which was first performed at the Royal National Theatre in 1979, asks how a just god can bestow the gift of genius on a foul-mouthed child like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, while giving a devout man like Antonio Salieri only enough talent to recognise his own mediocrity?
This is the key question Salieri wrestles with as he seeks to destroy his hated rival.
Critics have hailed
Amadeus as “genuinely compelling” adding that it “features some of Mozart’s most sublime music with its heart-piercing mixture of joy, beauty and pain”.
