SHAKESPEARE will be forever associated with Stratford-upon-Avon, but not everyone knows that Jane Austen received her only formal education in Reading.

In 1785, aged 10, she and her sister Cassandra attended a ladies’ boarding school by the Abbey Gateway — a fact today commemorated by a plaque on a nearby wall.

Next weekend the Pride and Prejudice author will be back in the spotlight when the inaugural Reading in Reading book festival is held at the historic Olympia Ballroom in London Street. The event runs from Friday, October 28, to Sunday, October 30.

Sunday’s programme will see Helena Kelly, the author of Jane Austen The Secret Radical, in conversation with fellow “Janeite” Gill Hornby.

The festival blends local authors with star names including Chris Tarrant, Sir Tony Robinson, Susie Dent and ex-Arsenal and England footballer Ian Wright.

Tickets for invididual events are £5 to £7, with a pass for all three days priced £20. For full details of the festival line-up and to book, visit www.readingarts.com
