"JESUS CHRIST is the same yesterday today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8, The Bible — New International Version).
At Binfield Heath Church we recently celebrated the chapel’s 180th year. The village is just a few miles south of Henley.
In 1835, under the leadership of James Sherman, the chapel was built along with a number of other similar chapels in the area.
At the anniversary service, Edward Malcolm spoke on 1 Corinthians 1:23: "We preach Christ crucified" (The Bible — NIV). Believers have met there to worship God and to proclaim the gospel for generations.
So many things change don’t they? People contend for radically different political ideals, world leaders rise and fall. Our relationships change, we lose people we have loved so much, and we gain new friends. Even the little chapel at Binfield Heath is so different now from what it was like in 1835.
But God’s word, the Bible, says: "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday today and forever".
The gospel of Jesus Christ, our God and Saviour, is constant — it never changes. From the first chapters of Genesis through to the end of the book of Revelation, the message of God’s saving plan is the same: We have all rebelled against the holy God. We cannot save ourselves, no matter how successful or moral we are. Even though we can do wonderful and kind things, we are all fundamentally messed up. And we feel it.
But God has made a way for us to know and enjoy Him. God sent His only Son, the Lord Jesus Christ to become a man and die in excruciating pain on a Roman cross, that ancient instrument of torture and execution.
Jesus died to take away our sins, so that whoever believes in Him and repents of their sins will "not perish but will have eternal life" (John 3:16). In this good news we can stand guiltless and loved before the Lord God.
Don’t we all long to know forgiveness for the mistakes we have made? Don’t we long to get rid of our guilt and to get rid of our shame? Everything in the world changes, but the offer of mercy and forgiveness in the gospel of Jesus Christ is constant.
So what is the thought for the week? The colours of the seasons change, school terms and uniforms change, political landscapes change, but "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday today and forever".
Jesus Christ died so that our sins can be forgiven as we say sorry to Him and trust in Him. Do you trust in Jesus Christ? Is He alone your saviour?
