AN unfortunate accident happened to Sir Anker Simmons KBE on Wednesday. It appears that he was mounting a bus in Whitehall, London, when the vehicle gave a jerk forward and before he could clutch hold of the handrail he was shot out on to the kerb. In falling, Sir Anker must have struck the step of the bus for he sustained a broken rib or two. Naturally, he is in a great deal of pain but is bearing his misfortune quite cheerfully and hopes to be up and about again in two or three weeks’ time.
A complaint has been received from the Thames Conservancy about oil getting into the river from the 9in surface water drain opposite the Royal Hotel. Presumably, this comes from motor vehicles outside the station and near Rolfe’s Garage. Henley Town Council’s lighting, drainage and bridge committee recommended that the surveyor be instructed to ascertain the cost of constructing an oil trap.
A discussion on “Does the League of Nations Work?” was held on Wednesday last at Holmwood, Binfield Heath, by kind permission of Mr Makower, by the local branch under the auspices of the British Legion.
