THE killing of MP Jo Cox shows “only too clearly” why David Cameron’s visit to Henley had to be invitation only, says John Howell.
The Henley MP was responding to criticism that the Prime Minister should have met the public during his visit on Monday last week, three days before the death of Mrs Cox.
Mr Cameron spoke about the EU referendum at an invitation-only event at Phyllis Court, a private members’ club, which the Henley Standard was prevented from attending.
Mr Howell said: “The meeting last week with the Prime Minister was neither secret nor just for Conservative town councillors. There were members of the public present and members of other political parties and of none.
“Some Henley residents may wish to make something of the situation but I think that the dreadful murder of Jo Cox MP shows only too clearly why the meeting with the Prime Minister had to be invitation only. It was on the advice of security services.
“History has shown that even in this county deranged people or those intent on doing evil do not recognise particular geography or places. Senior politicians have long had security around them identifying risk and seeking to minimise it.”
Angie Paterson, Mr Howell’s constituency business manager, responded to the Henley Standard’s front page story last week on Twitter, saying: “Perhaps the events of last Thursday help answer your question ‘Why so secret, Prime Minister?’”
The Remain campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
