Council to secure data

COMPUTERS, tablets and mobile phones belonging to Henley Town Council will be encrypted at a cost of £2,000 a year.

This will protect the council from loss or theft of data on its 22 PCs and portable devices.

A report to the council’s finance committee said: “Such breaches are known to cost councils across the country many millions.

“Any prosecution for breach of security would create untold levels of bad publicity.”

The council currently has its data backed up offsite daily and this is held for 30 days, so the worst loss would be one full day’s worth of work. This costs £95 per month.



As things stand, an insurance claim would be required to cover the cost of replacing equipment.
