A WOMAN has asked to take on a piece of council land next to her garden.

Melanie Matthews, of Valley Road, Henley, wants to lease or buy an area of ground that is owned by the town council and turn it into garden.

Speaking at a meeting of the council’s finance strategy and management committee, she said: “It borders our garden and the area is not terribly well maintained.”

She said she had discussed her proposal with Gareth Bartle, the council’s parks services manager, and he supported it.

“He said the area doesn’t serve any purpose and that a lot of trees there have self-seeded,” said Ms Matthews.

The committee agreed to consider the offer.
