More than 900 runners took part in Sunday’s event, setting off from Icknield Road and following an anti-clockwise circular route around the fields to the north of the village near South Stoke before finishing on Boudillon Field behind Goring Primary School.

About 100 runners were encouraged to sign up on the morning of the race by the sunny weather.

The winner was Steve Barnes, of Newbury Athletics Club, who completed the course in 35 minutes and 28 seconds.

Jessica Gibbon, who lives in Rotherfield Road, Henley, and attends Queen Anne’s School in Caversham, came home in 36 minutes and 52 seconds, smashing the previous junior women’s record by almost three minutes. Mr Hughes finished in 37 minutes and five seconds.

The winner of the men’s junior section was Jamie Dellimore who finished 16th overall with a time of 39 minutes and 24 seconds. Mary Grace Spalton, of Belgrave Harriers, won the women’s open section with a time of 39 minutes and 51 seconds that gave her 20th place overall.

Kay Walsha was the women’s veterans’ winner and Anne Sprinz won the women’s super-veterans section. Brian Kirsopp won the men’s super veterans and Margaret Moody won the women’s masters.

The race, now in its 18th year, raises money for Goring Primary School and is organised by the parent-teacher association. This year’s proceeds will go towards new computing and sports equipment and sports coaching.

Association member Jules Hopkinson said: “It was a very successful day and, of course, the weather was a big plus. It was great to be out enjoying the sunshine and a lot of people turned up to show their support.”

The race was started by Caroline Pierrepont, who runs Pierreponts café in High Street.
