A RARE opportunity to view — and buy — the work of an award-winning Henley artist is on offer at this weekend’s Windsor Contemporary Art Fair.
Among the 150-plus exhibitors is painter Camilla Dowse, who in November last year was named artist of the year by
Artists and Illustrators magazine.
Although known primarily for her work in acrylic paint on hand-prepped gesso boards, this summer saw Camilla shortlisted for the
Sunday Times’s watercolour competition.
She said: “I don’t often paint on paper any more, but decided to do so for this one competition. So I was surprised and delighted I was shortlisted.”
The work in question —
Charles Street, Brighton II — is currently on tour and will be on show at the Guildford House Gallery from Saturday until January 2.
Closer to home, the Royal Windsor Racecourse is the venue for the Windsor Contemporary Art Fair, which runs from 10am to 6pm on Saturday (5pm Sunday)
Now in it’s 11th year, the event is held in purpose-built marquees. Camilla, who exhibited at the fair for the first time last year, was impressed enough to have booked a bigger stand this time around.
“It feels quite upmarket and professional,” she says. “They present it very well. There’s lovely all-white walls.”
Camilla says she plans to hang six to eight works on her stand, with more stock in reserve should buyers choose to have their purchases wrapped there and then.
The fair will round off a busy year for an artist who is clearly going places.
“Well, the artist of the year award made things go completely mad, to be honest. Being shortlisted for the
Sunday Times competition was just very nice.”
However, this success means we might be seeing less of Camilla’s work locally.
“I probably won’t exhibit that much locally now because the award has meant I’ve become more of a national artist. Which is fantastic, but they keep me so busy I just don’t have time to do local exhibitions any more.”
Entry to the Windsor fair is £9 on the door with concessions available. Under-fives go free and entry for five- to 16-year-olds is £1. For further details or to book, go to www.windsorcontemporaryartfair.co.uk
