ALTHOUGH the bowls season finished before the end of September, it doesn’t mean there isn’t a social side outside of bowls.
On October 21 we held our annual dinner and trophy presentation evening at Henley Golf Club.
As usual, the golf club did us proud with an excellent meal and venue.
Under guidance from our toastmaster Norman Daniells, town councillor Ken Arlett presented the trophies to the winners and runners-up of all the competitions played in the 2022 season.
Ken was there representing our patron, the Mayor, who was unable to attend.
Great fun was had by the attendees, who numbered more than 40.
On November 12, members David and Theresa Palmer hosted a quiz for 40 members, family and friends in the clubhouse.
Although there were no fish and chips this year, everyone had a great time.
We held a carols evening on December 5 led by the Salvation Army band and choir.
With mince pies and mulled wine to support the entertainment, the club raised £200 for the Salvation Army’s good causes.
On January 2 we held our New Year’s walk.
As usual, we met at the club around 9.30am for bacon butties before Norman led us on a five-mile walk.
Given the rain and wind of the previous week, we were blessed with fantastic weather for a walk, chilly but with bright sunshine.
We started at Highlands Farm and took a route past Gillotts School, across the Henley Golf Club course to Binfield Heath and looped back to Highlands Farm before returning to the club for warming soup and mince pies at 1pm. With 16 of us on the walk and another seven for lunch, we all had a great time.
We are planning another quiz on February 18, again organised by David, and then we start to prepare for the new bowling season with our spring get-together in late March.
This is when existing members sign up for another year of lawn bowls and submit their entry forms for the knockout competitions.
However, before we finally get on the green around the end of April, Norman will be organising another walk for Good Friday with butties for breakfast and soup for lunch.
