Henley held its annual mixed triples competition in perfect bowling weather on Bank Holiday Monday, .
Eight teams battled it out in a round-robin event of seven games, each of five ends per game. To speed the game up a little, skips placed the jack rather than had it delivered by the lead and so each game took about 40 minutes to play.
The first four games were played without a break so lunch was taken at 1pm. At this point, Colin Ward’s team with Rachael Shaw and Peter Menhinick had a one-point lead over the chasing three teams who were only separated by shot difference.
The lunch break clearly affected some teams more than others with Colin’s team dropping back to fourth place by the sixth game while the three teams who had been in the chasing group maintained their form to battle it out for top spot with only two points separating them.
The final game of the tournament proved decisive with Andy Scott’s team with Jo Wilson and Steve Sullivan winning their last game while the other two teams, Simon Hatcher with Andrea Tate and Hylton Jenkins, and Kevin Currill with Karen Wakeling and Ian Gibson both lost their last game.
The final league table for the top three teams saw Andy Scott’s team with 11 points, Simon Hatcher’s with nine and Barrie Davies’ team, with Chris Swann and Angelika Crisa, climbing into third place with eight points from being last after the four morning games.
A most enjoyable time was had by all and captain Andy Scott wrapped up the day congratulating everyone for taking part and playing so sportingly.
Henley visited Reading on Wednesday last week in an Oddfellows Triples League (OTL) five mixed triples match, winning by the close margin of just five shots with a score of 84-79. Henley gained 12 OTL points to Reading’s two. Kevin Currill’s team, with John Munnelly and Jo Wilson, was again Henley’s highest winning rink by eight shots.
After nine ends it was an evenly balanced game at six all but then Henley pulled ahead to 13-8 after 13 ends and then picked up a six on end 16 to run out winners at 19-11.
Colin Ward with Peter Borsberry and Joan Edwards were evenly matched at 8-8 after 10 ends but they steadily increased their lead to eight after 16 ends and, although they dropped four shots on end 17, they finished with a three to take their score to 20-13.
Simon Hatcher with Norman Daniells and Karen Wakeling started slowly, were 3-13 down after 10 ends, drew level at 13-13 by the 17th end and then picked up a three on the last end to win 16-13.
Dave Wilson with Steve Sullivan and Sally Daniells raced into an eight-shot lead after nine ends, were pegged back to 14-11 after 14 ends and 17-16 on end 15 but then finished ahead by one with a score of 19-18. Barrie Davies with Andy Scott and Angelika Crisa struggled throughout the match and went down 10-24.
