HENLEY went down to a 101-74 friendly defeat at TRENTHAM on Saturday where they lost on all five mixed triples.
Peter Menhinick skipped in his first representative match with John Munnelly and Chris Swann. They were level 7-7 after seven ends, picked up two fours to lead 15-7, were level 18-18 after 17 ends but dropped two on the final end to go down 20-18.
Kevin Currill, with Martin Cranston and Melinda Swann, started slowly, were two down after nine ends then seven down after 13 ends and although they pulled it back to 14-13 down, they dropped three on the final end to go down 17-13.
Steve Sullivan, with Nigel Bridges and Frank Powell, led by one after 10 ends, dropped a two and a three to be 15-9 down and, although they then picked up a five they fell away to lose 22-14. Kevin Browne, with Joan Edwards and Richard Kingston, were 12 down after nine ends and although they pulled back a little over the final ends, they went down 22-12.
Andy Scott with Ian Ayers were a player short but a Trentham player stood in and thanks to his support, were only three down after 11 ends but they still lost 22-15.
On Sunday HENLEY got back to winning ways as they ran out 115-64 winners in their first Plomer Cup match of the season at CAVERSHAM, winning on all five rinks. Henley scored a maximum 12 points to Caversham’s 0. Steve Sullivan, with John Munnelly and Sally Daniells, stormed into a first half lead of 14 shots, increasing their lead over the second half to win 25-8. Kevin Currill, with Andy Scott and Glynis Holland, were eight up after nine ends and increased their lead to win 26-11.
Kevin Browne, with Peter Falle and Jo Wilson, were evenly matched 7-7 after seven ends before pulling away to win 22-13. Dave Wilson, with Hylton Jenkins and Angelika Crisa, were evenly matched 8-8 after nine ends then pulled away to win 21-15.
Simon Hatcher, with Peter Menhinick and Joan Edwards, were one up after 10 ends and pulled away to lead 17-7 after 14 ends. They then fell away to be 17-17 going into the final before picking up a four to win 21-17.
On Wednesday last week, SHIPLAKE recorded an 87-81 home Oddfellows Triples League win against PALMER PARK, with the hosts winning on three of the five rinks.
Shiplake’s best performing triple saw Janet Townley, David Bullock and Wendy Cross win 24-7. Shiplake’s other winners were Marilyn Mowatt, Keith Walters and Tony Reid 20-18 and Jane Ward, John Townley and Graham Kennedy 17-14.
On Sunday in the same competition, SHIPLAKE defeated MAIDEN ERLEGH 96-76 at Memorial Avenue.
Club captain and skip Wendy Cross recorded another victory, this time with Jane Ward and Pete Leverett 18-12.
Shiplake’s best performers were the triple of Lorraine Walters, David Bullock and Jim Bland who triumphed 28-16. Sue Reid, Ruth Copp and Tony Reid also won 20-13.
The Shiplake triple skipped by Graham Kennedy were the last to finish their game. They were one up with the last end to play.
Kennedy hit the jack to seemingly earn his side a tie but the opposing skip secured another shot with an excellent last bowl to win their game 19-18.
WARGRAVE went down to a 78-60 defeat in their friendly home clash with HURST last Sunday.
The visitors won on three of the four rinks played. Wargrave’s winning rink was that of Stan Crooks, Ian Robbins and Norah Holder who triumphed 23-9.
