Hatcher, Jenkins and Wilson help to secure Plomer points

HENLEY won four of the rinks when they visited DIDCOT in a five mixed triples Plomer Cup match on Wednesday last week, a score of 93-78 giving them 10 Plomer Cup points to Didcot’s two.

Simon Hatcher with Hylton Jenkins and Jo Wilson were the highest winning rink. They were eight up after seven ends, were pulled back to 13-11 after 10 ends but then picked up to win 23-15. Dave Wilson with John Munnelly and Romy Painter raced into a 15-shot lead after eight ends with a score of 17-2. Didcot steadily reduced the deficit but were unable to catch up with Henley, who ran out winners with a score of 20-16.

Steve Sullivan with Kevin Currill and Angelika Crisa were five-all after six ends and only leading by one after 13 ends but then pulled away to win 18-14. Kevin Browne with Joan Edwards and Glynis Holland led by small margins throughout with the score 10-9 after 14 ends. Although they were two down going into the final end, they scored a four to win 16-14.

Andy Scott with Sally Daniells and Nigel Bridges were always playing catch-up and lost 16-19.

On Saturday HENLEY visited the Island Bohemian Club in a five mixed triples friendly match which, because of persistent rain, was restricted to an average 12 ends. Henley won on four rinks and lost on one with a score of 74-41.

Joan Edwards with Hylton Jenkins and Dave Allen, in his first representative match, all bowled extremely well, racing to an impressive highest winning rink score of 26-0.

Kevin Currill with Peter Goddard and Ian Ayers were nine up after six ends and maintained their lead to win 14-5. Kevin Browne with Phil Smillie and Ian Wood played a closely fought rink, pulling back to one-up after 11 ends and then winning 13-10 on the 15th end. Andy Scott with Nigel Bridges and Richard Kingston just held on to their lead to win 9-7. Steve Sullivan with Terry Hearmon and Glynis Holland started slowly, pulled back over the latter ends but not enough and went down 12-19.

On Sunday, Henley recorded their first Oddfellows Triples League (OTL) win of the season against MAIDEN ERLEGH with a score of 120-52.

Henley gained 12 OTL points to the visitors’ two. Simon Hatcher with Hylton Jenkins and Angelika Crisa were the highest winning rink leading by 10 shots over the first nine ends, then doubling their lead over the final ends to win 34-7. Dave Wilson with Sally Daniells and Peter Watkins started very strongly, were 15 up after the first nine ends, and finishing, nearly matched Simon’s highest winning rink with a score of 32-6.

Kevin Browne with Peter Falle and Andrea Tate were evenly matched 9-7 after nine ends but then pulled away to win 23-10. Steve Sullivan with Joan Edwards and Frank Powell were evenly matched 6-5 after 10 ends, were 14-7 after 17 ends but dropped four shots on the final end to win 14-11. Andy Scott with Ramsay Adams and John Munnelly were nine down over the first half, pulled back to lead for the first time 15-14 after 16 ends then dropped four to go down 17-18.

For the first time in years, Henley have a Men’s Triples team entered in the National Competitions. The team is skipped by Dave Wilson with Simon Hatcher at two and Kevin Currill as lead.

They had a bye in the first round and played a CARTERTON team in the second round at home on Friday, May 30. This was a closely fought game which was only won on the last end when Henley scored four shots.

The third round was also a home game against a SOUTH OXFORD team on Monday last week. This again was a tight game, but Henley won it and travelled up to Banbury Borough Bowling Club to face another team from Carterton. Despite dropping an eight on the third end, the team fought back to be 19-20 behind on the 15th end but then powered through to win 28-20. They now face a BANBURY CENTRAL team in the semi-finals next month.
