Henley ease to comfortable win in derby double header clash

HENLEY ran out winners on all rinks in their combined derby clash at SHIPLAKE last Wednesday.

The match, that counted towards both the Oddfellows Triples League and Plomer Cup, saw the visitors win 88-60 to gain 14 triples points and 12 cup points.

Dave Wilson, with Angelika Crisa and Hylton Jenkins, led strongly from the start and kept up the momentum to run out convincing 23-7 winners.

Peter Menhinick, with Nigel Bridges and Joan Edwards, were 8-8 after eight ends and again 13-13 at the 14th. They then scored four on the 17th end to run out 18-16 winners.

Steve Sullivan, with Jo Wilson and Norman Daniells, started strongly and were 15-5 ahead by the 11th end. Shiplake picked up the pace then, scoring back-to-back two on the 12th and 13th end and a four at the 17th to close the gap to 17-15. Henley held on to their advantage and ran out 17-16 winners.

Kevin Browne, with Peter Watkins and Sally Daniells, were equally matched 7-8 after 12 ends but then edged ahead running out clear winners at 15-10. Peter Borsberry, with Karen Wakeling and John Munnelly, were 8-7 ahead after 10 ends then scored consistently to win 15-11.

On Thursday of last week, HENLEY went down to a narrow 71-68 mixed triples friendly defeat against HIGH WYCOMBE in a match that saw both teams win two rinks each.

Joan Edwards, with Peter Watkins and Hylton Jenkins, led from the start to win 20-8. Peter Menhinick, with Angelika Crisa and Ian Gibson, were under pressure throughout and lost 26-11.

Kevin Browne, with Karen Wakeling and Ramsay Adams, had a closely fought match but the Henley side just kept edging ahead to claim a 20-10 win. Peter Borsberry, with David Palmer and Peter Falle, faced a very experienced team and although they fought hard, they were edged out in a high-scoring contest, losing 17–27.

On Sunday HENLEY went down to a 66-56 Oddfellows Triples League defeat at HURST despite both sides winning two each of the four mixed triples. The hosts gained nine league points to Henley’s five. Three of the rinks were closely fought games. Steve Sullivan, with Karen Wakeling and Norman Daniells, got off to a slow start and were 8-3 behind by the eighth end. Henley then scored five on the ninth to restore some parity and then the lead changed hands six times before Henley came out on top by just two shots, 18-16.

Kevin Browne, with Angelika Crisa and Simon Hatcher, started well and, although they scored a six on the eighth end to take a 12-5 lead, were pegged back by Hurst over the next five ends to be 15-12 down by the 13th. Henley fought back to be tied 16-16 on the 17th before winning 17-16.

Peter Borsberry, with Joan Edwards and Pete Fall, were 8-4 down by the eighth end but then scored steadily over the next six ends to be 15-10 in front. Hurst then took charge over the last four ends and Henley lost 16-15.

Dave Wilson, with Sally Daniells and John Munnelly, were six shots down by the 17th and 12 shots down by the 14th to lose 18-6.

Last Saturday SHIPLAKE went down to a 71-53 four rink triples friendly defeat at GREAT HOLLANDS.

Shiplake’s winning rinks was that of Lorraine Walters, Ali Uygur and John Townley, who prevailed 14-11.

On Sunday SHIPLAKE ran out 61-56 winners in a five rinks friendly against THREE MILE CROSS with both sides winning two rinks each.

David Lloyd, Alan Gough and Wendy Cross scored one on the last end to tie their game 10-10. Pete Leverett, Sue Pitcher and Jane Ward won 15-8 and Marilyn Mowatt, Elaine Robinson and Graham Kennedy 11-7 for Shiplake.
