Royal British Legion

AT the March meeting of the Henley & Peppard branch of the Royal British Legion members and guests were treated to an illustrated talk entitled “Travels in India” by John Bodman, assisted by Rosemary Jones, secretary of the Shiplake branch.

They delighted us by stripping off their long winter coats to reveal fabulous Indian costumes including turban and decorated shoes.

Clearly enchanted by the country and its people, John gave us his and Rosemary’s fascinating insights into this astonishing land of such contrasts.

While he spoke of the exquisite Golden Temple at Amritsar and British shame over the 1919 massacre, Rosemary added information about current life in India from a woman’s perspective.

We also learnt about the pleasure of travelling on the Shimla Railway through lush green landscape, the warm hospitality of the people and also of the significance of the different religions practised in India.

Our meeting this month will be at the Menza Café at Henley Rugby Club on Tuesday, April 16 at 11.15am.

There will be a talk by Henley Poppy Appeal organiser Richard Pinches entitled “Bagnold’s boys in the desert” about the Long Range Desert Group.

Brigadier Ralph Bagnold, OBE, FRS, was a desert explorer, geologist and soldier who served in the First World War as an engineer in the British army.

His research work has been used by the American space agency NASA in its study of the terrain on Mars.

All are welcome and it is not necessary to be a member of the Royal British Legion or to have any military background, so do come along.

The cost is £18 to include a two-course lunch and tea or coffee and the chance to meet and chat with other local residents.

Booking is essential. Call Karen Grieve on on 07990 833241 or email hen leyonthames.secretary@
