Comic Relief: schoolchildren (and teachers) wear fancy dress and put on red noses

SCHOOLS and businesses in the Henley area raised money for Comic Relief on Red Nose Day.

The annual event was in aid of people suffering from poverty, discrimination and violence.

Rupert House School in Henley raised £235 as pupils made donations in exchange for wearing red accessories.

Members of the school council gave an assembly to the whole school about Comic Relief and then challenged teachers to do the viral TikTok dance to George Ezra’s Green Green Grass.

Headteacher Nick Armitage said: “We encouraged an eco-friendly day by suggesting pupils wear red noses bought in previous years and red accessories that they already had at home.”

Workers at the Chiltern House Business Centre in Station Road, Henley, raised more than £350 with a series of games including pin the nose on the Lenny Henry, cornhole toss, hoopla, darts and the official Comic Relief 2023 quiz. There was also a bake sale.

The winning team was the centre’s resident client, Common Ground Estate Management.

Kim Scholes, one of the organisers, said: “Our clients had a lovely time. It brightened up their day playing the carnival-style games and they filled their tummies with sweet treats.

“Albeit productivity was slightly down that day, it was definitely well worth raising money for Comic Relief.”

St Mary’s School in Henley held a non-uniform day with children dressing in superhero costumes or in red and raised £200.

Headteacher Rob Harmer said: “Our pupils enjoyed the opportunity to dress up and have fun, with some wonderfully enthusiastic superheroes spotted in the playground.”

Crazies Hill Primary School children dressed in red and raised £73.

Caversham Preparatory School also held a cake sale.
