A couple from Slough ‘felt like celebrities’ after being hailed as heroes at a national awards ceremony.

Aisha and Kamran Abdus-Samad were among 10 recipients at the 11th Heroes Awards by Best magazine on Thursday, October 16.

Held at the Waldorf Hotel in London, the Best Heroes Awards are where celebrities come together to celebrate 10 individuals who have done ‘extraordinary things in unthinkable circumstances’..

Presented by Vanessa Feltz, the famous names in attendance included Christine Lampard, Ann Widdecombe, Penny Smith, Ribard Blackwood, Wayne Sleep and Blake.

Aisha and Kamran work for Slough Children First (SCF), supporting children living with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

They help young people in Slough as carers in SCF’s short breaks service – offering children a chance to get involved in fun activities and experiences.

The husband and wife were awarded a BEM for providing respite care to children with special needs in the King’s New Year Honours earlier this year.

Kamran previously said their work supporting children living with SEND often involved ‘advocating for inclusivity’ and ‘creating opportunities for their [children’s] growth’.

Aisha and Kamran thought it was a scam when Best contacted them to say they had been nominated.

Speaking about the awards evening, Kamran told the Express: “Winning the Heroes Award from Best magazine was an incredible honour.

“We were filled with pride and gratitude to be selected. It was truly humbling to know that our work has been noticed in such a meaningful way.”

Other award winners on the night included Dynasty star Stephanie Beacham for services to the deaf community and Shameless star Tina Malone for speaking out on veteran suicide following the death of her husband, Paul Chase.

“The evening itself was nothing short of magical; we felt like celebrities as our story was celebrated among an inspiring audience that included well-known TV personalities,” added Kamran.

“Being recognised with the award has further inspired us to continue making a positive impact.”
