A Royal Navy veteran in Maidenhead has thanked the community after receiving 150 birthday cards to mark his 100th birthday.
Last month, St Mark’s Care Home put out a call for 100 cards for resident Ted Richardson ahead of his milestone on February 24. The appeal struck a chord, with well-wishers sending far more than expected.
Ted served as a piper and later in the Royal Navy, which allowed him to travel extensively, including service during the Korean War. He completed his service as a petty officer aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia.
After reaching 100 years old last week, Ted celebrated in style with family, fellow residents and a bagpiper from his old regiment.

Speaking after the celebrations, Ted said: “I had a smashing birthday. Thank you so much to everyone who sent me a birthday card, and thank you to my family and carers for making it a very special day.”
Emma Moffat, resident experience manager at St Mark’s Bupa Care Home, said: “When I spoke with Ted the next morning he said how wonderful the day was.
“He couldn't believe that we managed to find the bagpiper from his old regiment and he was thrilled with his card from the King.
“I told him that I had best get started on planning next year, so I can top it.”
