THE refurbishment of a 175-year-old organ at St Mary’s Church in Ewelme has been completed.
The work took two weeks and cost £20,000. Churchwarden Chips Gell said the pipe organ now made a “cleaner, sweeter sound”.
“The people who play the organ have all said how much easier and comfortable it is to use,” he said. The organ was made for the church in 1840 by London specialists William Hill and cost £150.
The renovation was suggested several years ago by Mander Organs, the firm that regularly tunes it.
The parochial church council agreed and received approval from the Oxford Diocese and the work was carried out by Mander.
Mr Gell said: “They stripped out the inside of the organ and laid it all out inside the church. They cleaned every individual part, made repairs where necessary and then put it all back together again.”
The keyboard was sent to Derbyshire to have some damaged keys repaired.
The project was funded by a “significant contribution” from the Friends of Ewelme Church, a grant from ChurchCare, fund-raising events and a “sizeable” private donation. Mr Gell added: “We’re trying to use the church as much as we can, not just for Sunday services and weddings. I want to leave the church in a good condition for the generations that follow.”
St Mary’s is a Grade I listed church built in 1434 by William and Alice de la Pole, the Duke and Duchess of Suffolk.
