A CAMPAIGN has been launched to save the bells at the church in Brightwell-cum-Sotwell.
For 800 years the bells at St Agatha’s have been rung for services, weddings and funerals as well as on national occasions, most famously the visit of George II in 1727.
Now the community needs to raise £45,000 to refurbish the bells.
David Greasby, the building committee chairman, said: “The bells have to be removed and taken away for restoration and re-tuning and the framework supporting them in the church tower needs refurbishing.”
Fund-raising chairman Tony Lascelles added: “The bells are an important aspect of the village’s heritage and if we don’t do this work the bells will eventually become silent, which would be a real shame for the village.
“These bells were hung in 1808 and, apart from additions, they haven’t been down since then so they need a lot of work.”
He said the project could take up to five months but he hoped the money would be raised by the end of next year through a combination of personal donations, local fund-raising activities and grants. An open garden and plant sale will be held on September 27 and a safari supper around the village on October 17.
From 2009 to 2011 the church raised £180,000 for an extension.
