Amour (12A)

Starring: Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva

An elderly couple struggle with the growing realisation that the wife is gradually succumbing to dementia.

A moving story of devotion and enduring love from Austrian director Michael Haneke, who won a Palme d’Or at Cannes with this film.

Lincoln (12A)

Starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones, Sally Field

Abraham Lincoln faces down the House of Representatives at the end of his second term of office in order to pass an anti-slavery bill.

Steven Spielberg elicits a fine performance from the man he has called “arguably the best actor in the world” — and who has scored the first hat-trick in history by winning his third Oscar for best actor.

Zero Dark Thirty (15)

Starring: Jessica Chastain and Joel Edgerton

The heroine of director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal’s follow-up to The Hurt Locker is this story of trying to track down Osama Bin Laden before he was finally assassinated.

A CIA agent known only as Maya is the pivotal character and it is Chastain’s most challenging role to date. Some harrowing interrogation scenes but a riveting watch.

Silver Linings Playbook (15)

Starring: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert de Niro

The quirky story of a former teacher who, back home after eight months in a psychiatric institution and diagnosed bipolar, hooks up with recently widowed Tiffany, who has mental problems of her own.

Jennifer Lawrence won best actress Oscar — and notoriety for tripping up on her way to the stage — for her performance in this “romcom without the schmaltz”.

Wreck-It Ralph 3D (PG)

Voices of: John C Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jane Lynch, Alan Tudyk, Jack McBrayer

A computer game character is tired of always playing the bad guy, and seeing all the glory going to Fix-It Felix, so he sets out on a game-hopping journey to turn himself into a hero.

John C Reilly is the loveable Ralph, and is winning the hearts of kids all over the country. A kind of modern, techno version of Toy Story.
