After an absence of 12 years, and using columns Helen Fielding wrote for the Independent in 2005 rather than the third novel as the basis for the film, fans might be left scratching their heads.
The good news is Sharon Maguire, who directed the first film, returns — as does the dashing Mark Darcy, played by Colin Firth, and a host of popular characters from the first two instalments.
Special mention here must go to Jim Broadbent and Gemma Jones as hapless Bridget’s clueless, yet loveable parents, and sweary best friend Shazza, played by Sally Phillips. There’s no Hugh Grant this time, but Patrick Dempsey as dapper American Jack Qwant is Bridget’s new love interest.
And with that bombshell, film fans, I’m sorry to have to break the news that Bridget and Mark Darcy are no longer together.
After splitting Bridget’s “happily ever after” hasn’t quite gone according to plan.
Fortysomething and single again, she decides to focus on her job as a top news producer and surround herself with old friends and new. For once, Bridget has everything completely under control. What could possibly go wrong?
Then her love life takes a turn and Bridget meets Jack, the suitor who is everything Mr Darcy is not. In an unlikely twist she finds herself pregnant, but with one hitch — she can only be 50 per cent sure of the identity of her baby’s father.
With the success of the first two films, fans are likely to flock to cinemas to see another chapter of Bridget’s life unfold.
Those who may not have have followed with much attention may also find enjoyment here and a few much needed laughs as summer draws to a close.
