Oddfellows

ROYAL Berkshire Oddfellows, a Reading friendly society which provides opportunities for older adults in the area to socialise, is hosting a sing-along to promote friendship.

Members of its regular Singing Together group will be showcasing the joy of singing at a free event at Oddfellows Hall in Oxford Road on Tuesday, September 26 at 10.30am.

Guests will have a chance to sing along with the amateur group and enjoy refreshments.

The public performance is part of the group’s annual Friendship Month celebrations in September when members come together to highlight the benefits of friendship and host taster events for newcomers to try.

Samantha Fields, the singing group’s choir leader, says: “About 20 of us get together every Tuesday morning, when we enjoy the company and singing in equal measure.

“We can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on with the hope that we’ll attract a few new people to join us. You don’t need any experience, just a willingness to give it a go.”

Lynn Harrison, branch secretary of Royal Berkshire Oddfellows, says: “If anyone feels they could benefit from meeting new people in the area, then this is the perfect chance to take that first step. It’s going to be a really uplifting event. Everyone will be made most welcome.

“We know that people’s circle of friends can alter dramatically in later life and that we benefit from having a well-rounded friendship group, which includes new friends, pals with shared hobbies and interests and friends who challenge and support you.”

Bridget Chubb, who joined the Singing Together group in 2019, said: “Such a wonderful energy is created in the room when we meet and sing. You feel great and it’s hard to not put any cares behind when you’re there.

“I’ve made so many great friends through the group. If anyone’s nervous about giving singing a go, I’d say we’ve all been there but it soon passes as you realise it’s a team effort and full of fun.”

Royal Berkshire Oddfellows is a branch of Reading District Oddfellows, which has more than 900 members, who meet regularly in and around Reading to enjoy social events and activities and to fundraise.

The Singing Together group meets at Oddfellows Hall at 10.30am every Tuesday, with teas being served from 10am for those who wish to chat beforehand.

A gentle exercise session is also held at the hall every Thursday at 11.15am with refreshments served from 10.30am.
