Café Scientifique

THE next meeting of Café Scientifique Henley will take place on Wednesday, November 15 when Christopher Merchant will speak on “What now and what next for climate?”

Record-breaking weather attributed to climate change has been a feature of 2023. High global temperatures have been widely noted in the media.

Chris will focus on the warming oceans to put 2023 and expectations for 2024 in the context of recent climate change.

Looking further ahead, he will discuss how the pace with which net zero goals are pursued will significantly determine the trajectory of future global warming.

Humanity must choose what climate future unfolds over coming decades.

The question for each of us is what role we will play in determining what choice is made.

Christopher is professor of ocean and earth observation at the University of Reading and scientific lead for the UK Earth Observation Climate Information Service.

The key expertise of Chris and his team is measuring the temperature of Earth from space, most notably across the global oceans in association with the European Space Agency.

Before becoming an academic, Chris worked in the electricity industry and engineering consultancy. The meeting will take place at Henley Hockey Club from 7.30pm to 9.30pm (doors open 7pm). To register to attend, email
