Henley u3a

ADOLF Hitler’s mistress, Eva Braun, was the subject of October’s talk at Henley u3a given by Melanie Gibson-Barton.

Fifty five people attended the illustrated talk and many stayed on for tea and a chat.

Eva Braun first met Hitler in Munich when she was 17 and went to work for Heinrich Hoffman, Hitler’s personal photographer.

Although Hitler was 23 years her senior, Eva became obsessed with him and inveigled her way into his inner circle.

Hitler always chose not to be photographed with girlfriends, believing that he would have more sex appeal if he was thought to be a single man.

Nevertheless, Eva became a fixture at Hitler’s residence in Berchtesgaden and was eventually seen in public with Hitler when her sister Gretl married Fegelein, an SS liaison officer.

Many of the surviving pictures and films of Hitler were taken by Braun.

Hitler and Eva were briefly married in April 1945 as the Red Army approached Berlin.

A few days later they both committed suicide in the bunker beneath the Reich building.

Henley u3a is open to all retired seniors in Henley and surrounding areas. For a modest annual fee, members can develop new interests and meet like-minded people.

There are currently about 25 active groups together with walks and coffee
mornings. A programme of monthly general talks and art talks is also open to non-members. Last month’s art talk was based on the work of Stanley Spencer.

Talks take place in the parish hall of Sacred Heart Church and start at 2pm prompt. Parking is off Walton Avenue.
