BARBECUES have been banned from Marsh Meadows in Henley. They were already banned from Mill Meadows and have now been prohibited on the neighbouring riverside grassland, which is popular with picnickers and visitors. The town council has put up new signs informing people of the ban, which it says is for “safety and operational reasons” during the hot weather. Town clerk Mike Kennedy said: “We are worried about the possibility that a barbecue could set fire to grasses as it is quite dry at the moment.”

A memorial to Sir Frank Crisp, one of Henley’s biggest benefactors, has been restored. The town council spent £800 on the repair of the marble pillar at Fairmile Cemetery. The work was carried out by stonemasons E T Shephard, of Reading Road, Henley. The memorial had been cracked and was described earlier this year as a “disgrace” by town councillor Elizabeth Hodgkin.

A car wash is to be opened in the car park of the Tesco store in Henley. The supermarket has been granted planning permission to convert nine parking spaces into a hand wash and valeting service with a canopy and cabin.
