HENLEY station was evacuated on Monday evening and two trains were stopped because it was thought there was a bomb on the platform. The police arrived at about 7.40am and the station was closed for an hour. It was lucky for Henley after the disastrous explosions earlier in the day at King’s Cross and Euston stations as the “bomb” turned out to be a holdall which contained some items of clothing and an alarm clock.

A great deal of hard work was done by members of Henley and District Agricultural Association to ensure that this year’s Henley Show was one of the best ever. Their efforts were not in vain for up to 9,000 people turned out in glorious weather on Saturday, probably a show record.

Michael Heseltine, speaking to Henley businessmen at a lunch at the Red Lion Hotel, stated the Government’s intention to break out of “this stop-go problem”. He said: “We are to maintain the growth rates that we’ve set ourselves because without that we will not get the investment in industry and we shall fall further behind other countries.”
