WHEN the announcement was made that Capt Reginald Terrell, member for the Henley division of Oxfordshire, was taking a wife, it was thought to be a fitting opportunity to show the constituency’s appreciation of his devoted services by offering for his acceptance a suitable wedding gift. Subscriptions were invited and a sufficient sum was subscribed to purchase a handsome solid silver tea service and tray.
Henley Fair was held last weekend and the weather being fine it was largely patronised. Some of the proprietors of attractions decided to remain on Monday and gave part of their proceeds to the Henley and District War Memorial Hospital. Bags of confetti were distributed free and much fun and frolic prevailed.
Shortly after midnight on Sunday, a fire was discovered at a flat near the station in Shiplake. Mr Hope Johnstone, the occupant, was aroused by a smell of burning and found an oil stove well alight. He was throwing it out of the window but, finding it too hot, dropped it and the place was soon in flames. The fire brigade arrived within 20 minutes of a call and saved the premises.
