HENLEY firemen were called out to two incidents involving people being stuck in lifts on Saturday. The first involved a man at Victoria Court in Reading Road, who was in the lift when he found the doors would not open. He remained calm and read his newspaper until firemen opened the doors with a lift key. At the Sue Ryder hospice in Nettlebed, a lift stopped below a floor, leaving a woman trapped until it could be cranked back up.

The town hall will be flying the Royal British Legion flag on Remembrance Day. Councillors have decided not to affix a giant poppy to the front of the building as it would look “absolutely hideous”. The poppy, marketed by the Royal British Legion, weighs 37lb and measures 5ft by 5ft. “The flag that we have is far more suitable than a tatty glass-fibre red blob on our building,” said Councillor Jill Owen.

A new bandstand in Mill Meadows is still on the cards despite the withdrawal of cash from Henley Rotary Club. The town council is to take on the building itself as a Millennium project, using the Victorian pastiche design already agreed.
