MR F L Pitman (chairman) presided at the annual meeting of the stewards of Henley Royal Regatta, held at the Great Western Hotel, Paddington, on Tuesday. There was a fair attendance of well-known rowing men. The report of the year 1923, submitted by the committee of management, said the number of entries to the regatta, 98, constituted a record. It also said that, with the consent of Lord Hambleden, the committee had decided to straighten and widen the channel on the Berkshire side of the island.
No finer place for such a brilliant function could have been fixed upon than Phyllis Court Club for the Henley and South Oxfordshire County Ball and those present on Friday evening were loud in their praises of the excellence of the arrangements. The scheme of decorations was most effective and when the electric light was switched on the scene was gorgeous.
At the lighting, drainage and bridge committee of Henley Town Council, councillor Turton Green complained that a resolution of the council that night lamps should not be extinguished until half and hour before sunrise was not being followed.
