SIXTEEN beds lie empty each night at Chilterns End old people’s home in Greys Road, Henley, while people who ought to be in them are taking up valuable hospital beds or are living at home. The reason? There are not enough staff at the home. The waiting list for local people wishing to enter an old folks home has been as high as 80, though it has gone down now. But the staff situation is that bad that six nights a week Charles Simmons, the warden, has to drive 34 miles to Berinsfield and back to pick up three night attendants.
There is no firm date for the installation of traffic lights on Henley Bridge but it is not likely to be before May at the earliest. There have been calls for traffic lights at this junction for many years and in April last year, the Standard reported that the scheme was in the Department of the Environment’s programme.
