HENLEY’S new trial traffic scheme could be reviewed sooner than planned after drivers endured a nightmare start to the opening week. Rush-hour traffic heading for the town queued back as far as Bix, Fawley Court, Shiplake Cross, Wootton Manor in Greys Road and Conway’s Bridge on Wargrave Road. Roger O’Neill, Oxfordshire County Council’s principle planning officer, admitted there was considerable disruption.

Henley could become part of the preferred area for night flights to Heathrow, a local campaigner has warned. At the moment, the town only experiences night flights when there are easterly winds but it could face a minimum of 17 flights a night if proposals put forward by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions are accepted by the minister John Prescott. A three-month consultation period ends next Friday.

An eight-year-old boy from Peppard was taken to Sonning Common health centre on Monday afternoon after trapping his finger in a cymbal. When doctors could not release him they called firefighters from Henley who used metal snips to extricate the digit.
