THE American Rowing Federation has stepped in to help the Oxford University crew whose boat for the Boat Race was smashed in a road crash on Sunday. The Americans have lent their shell to Oxford for the race and it is equipped with fittings from the smashed boat. The accident happened at Hurley between London and Radley. A strong cross wind ripped the boat from its trailer even though it was tethered down.

Henley’s new Mayor is to be Denis Moriatry. He will take over from Margaret Day in May. Born in Kent, he was educated at Reading School and then St John’s College, Oxford, where he obtained a degree in modern history. He was president of the university opera club and the junior common room.

Henley District guides and brownies have set up an association to try to save them from their impending financial troubles. About 20 people attended a public meeting at the youth centre but most of those were guides and brownie leaders. Despite the disappointing response, it was decided to form an association in the hope of recruiting more parents later.
