King Charles III Coronation - Old Copse Gardens

King Charles III Coronation - Old Copse Gardens

ABOUT 40 people in Sonning Common enjoyed traditional games as part of their coronation street party.

Residents set up tables along the middle of Old Copse Gardens for a communal lunch where everyone brought out items of food and drink.

The area was also decorated with Union flags and bunting. Gaming areas were then set up at either end of the road where both children and adults could play throughout the afternoon. Organiser Julie Shorter said: “We had games of skittles, stick the crown on the King and a game that involved throwing a beanbag through the mouth of King Charles.

“There was also a giant bullseye game which had been drawn on the pavement with chalk, along with giant Jenga and swing ball.

“One of the neighbours had brought out their PA system and so we had some cracking Eighties tunes throughout the afternoon.

“The event was really one for the community as we had people aged from eight months up to age 80 and there was so much variety in the games available that it really was a great party.”

Mrs Shorter said that the King’s coronation was a “much-needed excuse” to get people together and have a good time.

She said: “It gave everyone an opportunity for everyone to get to know their neighbours – it really was a community event. The atmosphere was great and everyone joined in and mixed.

“One of the highlights for most of us was seeing the children of all ages joining in and playing with each other and playing traditional games such as hopscotch.

“One child brought out a box of coloured chalks and just started drawing in the road. It was joyous to see not a phone or tablet in sight”.

The event went so well that residents have decided to do it again next year and not wait for another royal occasion. Mrs Shorter added: “We’re just going to do it.”
