AN appeal for funds has been launched to help protect water voles and their habitats.
The Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust says the number of voles in this area is increasing — against the national trend — due to its conservation work supported by landowners.
Julia Lofthouse, who is leading appeal said: “Although we’ve seen an increase in water vole populations, in some areas by almost 60 per cent, they can disappear as readily as they arrive.
“My worry is that if we turn our backs, even momentarily, all our good work could be undone and signal the end for some of our local water vole colonies.”
The trust set up Britain’s first water vole recovery project after a 1990 survey showed the animal had vanished from 94 per cent of its habitats.
