Consultation launched to extend 20mph zone

A CONSULTATION on plans to extend the 20mph speed limit zone in Henley is under way.

The current zone came into force in January 2020 and covers all roads in the town centre as well as King’s Road, Hop Gardens, Deanfield Avenue, Gravel Hill and parts of Reading Road, Greys Road and Northfield End.

In 2022, residents of nine other roads in Henley campaigned to extend the 20mph zone further out, where some 30mph limits still apply.

Henley Town Council agreed at its meeting on Tuesday to apply to Oxfordshire County Council, the highways authority, for a town-wide 20mph zone. Councillor Stefan Gawrysiak said: “I think a 20mph zone for Henley is the right thing to do. Henley Town Council has already approved or voted for it [previously].”

As part of the county council’s campaign to eliminate deaths and injuries from road incidents in the county, communities can request the introduction of 20mph limits and is funded by the council.

Under the new proposal, sections with a 30mph speed limit will still remain on some roads including the A4130, A4155 and Harpsden Way. Existing 40mph and 50mph limits in the area will be unaffected.

The deadline for responses is Friday, October 18 at 5pm. To take part, visit letstalk.
