A BENCH is likely to be installed at a public convenience in Henley to allow disabled visitors to be changed easily.
The toilets at Leichlingen Pavilion in Mill Meadows were refurbished by the town council last year at a cost of £100,000 but there was no budget for a “rising” bench in the family room so a static bench was installed.
Now the Rotary Club of Henley Bridge has offered to pay for the installation of a new rising bench and a year’s maintenance.
A plaque would be positioned above the bench saying that the equipment was a gift to the people of Henley from the club. Jeni Wood, a member of the club and a former councillor, told a meeting of the council’s recreation and amenities committee: “When we were planning the loos we spoke to families of disabled people and they said a rising bench would be lovely.
“If there wasn’t a bench at all what a carer would do is change them on the floor. That room is the only disabled/family room in the area.”
Mrs Wood said a firm had provided several quotes and the most expensive was £1,750, which included the cost of the bench, installation and a five-year warranty.
