JANUARY would not be January without a post-Christmas traditional ballet for the family, and the Wycombe Swan comes up with the goods this year, writes Lesley Potter.
Moscow City Ballet comes to town from Monday to Thursday, January 28 to 31, with performances of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.
Swan Lake is the story of Prince Siegfried who falls in love with the beautiful swan queen, Odette. The Nutcracker tells the tale of Clara’s magical adventure with her nutcracker prince and their visit to the Land of Sweets, and an encounter with the Sugar Plum Fairy.
The celebrated dance company was founded in 1988, and is one of Russia’s most successful and popular touring ballet companies. It is celebrated for its Russian “big story” ballet choreography and for its lavish sets and dazzling costumes.
The scores are performed live by Moscow City Ballet Orchestra.
Founder Victor Smirnov-Golovanov said: “In these difficult economic times I’m amazed by the support and appreciation UK audiences give to Moscow City Ballet. I truly believe that dance is escapism and I’m delighted that people find enjoyment and pleasure in watching our gifted dancers perform our Russian jewels.”
