MATTHEW BOURNE’s highly-acclaimed version of Swan Lake is back at the Wycombe Swan next spring and booking opened this week.
The bold interpretation, featuring a gaggle of male dancers as the swans instead of the traditional ballerinas in tutus, premièred at Sadler’s Wells in 1995 and has toured nationally four times.
The production, which features the original music by Tchaikovsky teamed with a modern and humorous take on the choreography, has collected more than 30 international theatre awards including three Tony awards.
The tour, which visits the Wycombe Swan from Tuesday to Saturday, May 13 to 17, is a collaboration between Bourne’s New Adventures group and the Broadway Entertainment Group.

Matthew Bourne is now recognised as one of the leading choreographers in the ballet world. As well as Swan Lake he has created fresh interpretations of several other classical ballets, including Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Nutcracker!
Other innovative works include Dorian Gray, a ballet version of Oscar Wilde’s novel, and The Car Man, a modern-day ballet version of Bizet’s opera Carmen.
Bourne has also choreographed several other major revivials of classical musicals, including Cameron Mackintosh’s productions of Oliver! in 1994 and 2009, and My Fair Lady in 2002.
