JOHN Green, president of the Henley branch of the Royal British Legion, recalled the moment he was told the Second World War was over at a talk hosted by the Henley Historical and Archaeological Society.
“It is a very special day for all of us,” he said. “I was 10 years old in Sheffield. I went up into the attic to try and find a flag and the only thing I could find was a French one, so I nailed it to my scout pole and went out with my gang of chaps around the town. A miserable old *** said ‘the British won the war, not the French’.”
