LOOKING down across the Hennerton Backwater, it’s easy to miss the public footpath access that leads across the fine grounds of Hennerton Golf Club.
Apart from great views across three counties, there’s an information board in the club grounds describing a distressing incident in this area during the Second World War.
On November 13, 1943 a USA-made Boeing “Flying Fortress” named Sunrise Serenader encountered problems on its way from Kettering and eventually crashed on farmland in Wargrave, scattering wreckage on its route.
Exactly 71 years after the crash in 2014 a remembrance service was held which included the Home Secretary Theresa May and residents Jim Waldron and Mary Burge who saw the incident as schoolchildren.
