St Mary’s kickstarted their World Book Day with a rollicking poetry slam, regaling assembly with classics like T. S. Eliot’s Macavity: The Mystery Cat and C. S Lewis’ The Late Passenger.
Poppy Burkitt, a Year 5 student dressed as Dorothy from L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of OZ, said: “I’ve been lots of different characters like Hermione and Alice in Wonderland, but today I wanted to pick something old-fashioned. So I chose Dorothy because it fits into that theme.”
Freddie Hall, a Year 6 student dressed as Artemis Fowl from Eoin Colfer’s series of the same name, said: I’ve been here for three years, and I’ve done quite a few different things. To be perfectly honest with you, I just looked at my bookshelf, picked a book that I’d read and enjoyed, and just did that one.”
Catherine Yoxall, marketing and communications manager at St Mary’s School, added: “They’re reading across year groups, so the Year 6s are reading with reception and the Year 5s are reading with the Year 2s.
“The teachers are reading their favourite books as well as a quiz.”
“They’ve chosen characters from over 40 different books, so this morning we were all trying to guess which one was which. All the staff have dressed up too.”
