World Book Day: children write their own stories and share favourite books

Sacred Heart Primary School, Henley: Sacred Heart began a week-long celebration of World Book Day by sharing story writing, whereby one class wrote the first paragraph of a story, sent it to another class to continue and so on. At end of the day, the children came together to read the story. Other activities included a pyjama night, a book hunt and “drop everything and read”. Year 1 and year 2 also had a field trip to the Story Museum in Oxford. Nicola Edwards, assistant headteacher, year 4 teacher and English co-ordinator, said: “The whole purpose is to raise the awareness of reading for pleasure and making sure it’s not a chore. I wanted the teachers to model read as well, so the children realised it’s not just something they do in their lessons.” Mrs Edwards said her favourite book was Albert Camus’ The Stranger
