THE chief executive of a counselling charity gave a talk to
A-level psychology students at The Henley College.
Sophie Wellings told of her work with Riverside Counselling, the careers available in the sector and the impact of the work that the charity has on the lives of people who needed help.
This was followed by a session with the college’s Pathways students, who have been selling gifts to raise funds in support of Riverside for its Christmas fundraising appeal.
Riverside, which is based at the Friends Meeting House in Northfield End, is the college’s chosen charity partner and students have been taking part in fundraising and wellbeing activities throughout the campus. All students will also have the opportunity to join a virtual session focusing on resilience and wellbeing in the new year.
Ms Wellings said: “Our work with young people and adults seeking support for their mental wellbeing remains as vital as ever. Opportunities like this to raise awareness of our services and generate much-needed funding are incredibly valued and make a real difference in our community.”
Libby Robey, president of the student union, said: “Riverside is such a lifeline for people in our community, especially during tough times. Supporting its Christmas appeal feels like a way we can give back and show how much we care. It’s not just about raising money — it’s about making sure support is there for anyone who needs it and that really matters to us as students.”
In 2023, Riverside provided more than 5,500 one-to-one sessions as well as numerous group and drop-in sessions.
It helps clients with issues such as anxiety, depression, self-harm, bereavement, social isolation, gender identity, abuse, domestic violence and drug and alcohol issues.
Riverside says demand is increasing in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic and as a result of the cost of living crisis. To make a donation, visit www.justgiving.com/riverside
